What Happened to GPU Mining?

The single biggest event was Ethereum’s switch to Proof of Stake in September 2022. Ethereum was the coin that made GPU rigs profitable for most miners worldwide, including in Pakistan. Once that switch happened, the majority of the GPU mining market collapsed overnight.

What remains today is a small niche of GPU-mineable coins like Kaspa, Ergo, and Alephium. These exist and some people still mine them, but the returns are nowhere close to what GPU rigs used to generate during the Ethereum era. For someone investing serious money in 2026, GPU mining is no longer where the real opportunity is.

What Pakistani Miners Are Buying Instead

The market has moved entirely toward ASIC miners, specifically the Antminer S21 and S23 series from Bitmain. These machines are built for one purpose only, Bitcoin mining, and they do it far more efficiently than any GPU setup ever could.

The Antminer S21 XP delivers 270 TH/s of hashrate at 13.5 J/TH efficiency. At today’s Bitcoin price of approximately $61,500, one S21 XP running on solar or hydro power generates roughly $222 per month in profit. As Bitcoin price recovers toward its previous all-time high of $126,200, that monthly profit scales up proportionally, reaching $455 or more at the same electricity cost.

The Antminer S21+ Hyd, a liquid-cooled variant, delivers 395 TH/s and is specifically built for hot climate areas like Karachi, Lahore, and Multan where air-cooled machines struggle in summer. This machine currently earns approximately $324 per month on free electricity, with the same upward scaling as Bitcoin price increases.

The newer S23 series machines push efficiency even further, representing the latest generation of Bitcoin mining hardware available.

Why ASIC Miners Make More Sense Than GPU Rigs in Pakistan

The comparison is not close anymore. A GPU rig with 8 cards costs roughly Rs. 4 to 6 lakh and, on the few remaining GPU-mineable coins, generates a fraction of what a single ASIC miner produces.

A single Antminer S21 XP costs more upfront but produces $222 to $455 per month depending on Bitcoin price, on the same electricity setup. The efficiency difference between ASIC and GPU hardware for their respective target coins is enormous, and Bitcoin’s market depth, liquidity, and institutional adoption make it a fundamentally more stable long-term hold than most GPU-mineable altcoins.

For Pakistani miners with access to solar or hydro power, ASIC mining with the S21 or S23 series is simply the better business decision in 2026.

What This Means If You Already Have a GPU Rig

If you built a GPU rig in 2020 or 2021 for Ethereum mining, that rig is no longer mining Ethereum. Some of those GPUs can be repurposed for Kaspa or other Scrypt/GPU-friendly coins, but the returns will be modest compared to what they once produced.
